On 30 June the Government published a major policy document, Building Britain's Future, alongside its draft legislative programme.
The Local Government Association (LGA) has provided a detailed analysis of the plans that will affect local government.
Accompanying the launch of Building Britain’s Future (external link), the government published details of policy publications planned for the coming months, including:
- Active transport strategy: how to encourage low carbon transport, reduce congestion and promote health and wellbeing. (Department of Health/Department for Transport)
- Getting Britain back to work white paper: proposals to support the rapid return to full employment. (HM Treasury/Department for Business, Innovation and Skills/Department for Work and Pensions)
- National skills strategy: how to put in place an approach to skills policy which prepares Britain for an economic upturn. (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills)
- Policing white paper: options for further reform of the police to ensure communities are safer and police are responding to local communities. (Home Office)
- Preventative NHS strategy: plans to ensure investment in and focus on prevention of illness, on early intervention and on partnership with patients. (Department of Health)
The Strengthening Local Democracy publication, which proposes to promote democratic renewal and strengthen the power of local government is open for consultation until 2 October 2009.
